BUILD YOUR BUSINESS WHILE HELPING PEOPLE TO RECOVER
The elite interventionists participating in the 7th UK/European Symposium on Addictive Disorders could fill all rehab places in the UK for a year.
They are reaching out to families across Europe, and seeking treatment organisations closer than the US to which they can also refer patients.
John Southworth and Ken Seeley of the Interventions TV series reveal what they look for when placing clients – incidentally, Southworth is also responsible for treatment outcomes for doctors, nurses, dentists and lawyers in Idaho.

USE NEUROSCIENCE IN YOUR DAILY PRACTICE
Professor Carlton Erickson shares the latest research on how our brain chemistry determines addictive behaviours, and how talking therapies can, in turn, change brain chemistry. Dr Richard Seely explains how to optimise recovery through understanding its links with neurobiology. And Kevin McCauley reframes it all into social marketing techniques to get the message across.
SELFCARE FOR CARERS
The indomitable Max Cohen shares the lessons he gives his university students on avoiding burnout and compassion fatigue. Gillian Bridge teaches resilience. Delegates can also attend mindfulness sessions each morning, and gain support at daily open & closed 12-step meetings.
AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ADDICTION MEDICINE
We need doctors who see addicts as people not prescribing numbers, doctors who will work with therapists and counsellors for the benefit of clients/patients so that they can turn around their lives free of harmful substances. Reaching out to delegates are ASAM president Dr Louis Baxter, ASAM board member Dr Michael Miller and past president Dr Andrea Barthwell, who was also the White House deputy drug czar. They will be joined by Dr Oscar D’Agnone and others, to help establish best practice here.
A certificate of attendance will be provided for delegates wishing to apply for Continuing Education Credits. The symposium is accredited by UKPCBADC, the UK Professional Certification Board of Alcohol/Drug Counsellors, a member board of the ‘gold standard’ IC&RC International Certification & Reciprocity Consortiun of Alcohol & Drug Counsellors. IC&RC president Jeff Wilbee will again be at UKESAD for the third year running, copresenting with Strada’s Joy Barlow and others on the accreditation of staff.
THE NEXT GOVERNMENT: GUIDELINES FOR US ALL
Whichever party wins the general election in May, Conservative Minister for Justice David Burrowes and Minister for Home Affairs James Brokenshire have excellent histories of working for effective treatment and can steer delegates through future policy. White House drugs adviser Keith Humphreys joins the opening plenary to share joint thoughts.
