A play about the creators of Alcoholics Anonymous
Review by Tony Parkin from London Festival Fringe
Can anyone ever get rid of the demons? Or the ghosts that follow you? It seems not, ‘cos however long Bill Wilson (the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous) stays sober, he has other problems: his smoking, his
womanising, making his wife frantic, to the point of heart attack, and attacking him. Dr Bob Smith his cofounder is his constant ghost, and will not let him be.
The play itself is so unusual in its shifts and shades that you cannot take your concentration away… I urge you to see it. Great performances from Jay Benedict as Bill, Cathy Walker as Lois, and Michael Halden as Dr Bob Smith; Phil Fox deserves much credit for the writing and direction. It’s a blast for Fringe Theatre!
Acted with vicissitudes of emotion, this play could be – should be – at the Fringe Awards next year at the Waldorf! Here’s my vote for it.
