Broadway Lodge – Primary treatment
Broadway Lodge, a charity, has been providing treatment for those with addictions since 1974. Primary treatment has 33 beds and offers an 8-week course based on the 12 Step programme. If required we have a second stage treatment programme for a further 13-15 weeks. To encourage the changes in behaviour necessary to maintain a good recovery from Chemical Dependency, and to maintain a safe environment, the treatment centre operates within a clear set of House Rules and Expectations. With the support of a professional staff team and the peer group, old behaviours can be challenged and new ones learned. As a positive part of the treatment programme all bedrooms are shared and have up to 4 beds. Privacy within the bedrooms is therefore limited. Each patient has an individual plan of care within the 12–Step framework that identifies any personal needs. This plan is constantly reviewed through counselling and group work processes and amended as necessary. There are nine qualified counsellors in Primary Care giving daily, individual, counselling sessions at the beginning of treatment and then at least three sessions per week. Group therapy is twice a day. Our Medical Officers and nursing staff will deal with your medical needs. Broadway Lodge offers in-house detoxification and prescribed medications are continued at the discretion of the Medical Officers. Nurses are available 24 hours per day and are able to offer a variety of complementary therapies. Patients attend Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous or Overeaters Anonymous meetings during their treatment programme.
Broadway Lodge – Secondary Care
Secondary Care, 22 beds, occupies 5 houses in Faversham Drive and patients are accommodated in single and double bedrooms within the houses. The treatment is based on Steps 6–12 of the 12 Step programme and comprises group therapy, individual counselling and assignment work. Secondary treatment lasts for 13 weeks and offers a stepping stone back into “normal living”. Life skills are an integral part of the treatment process and patients therefore care for their environment, with some supervision from a housekeeper, and take responsibility for the planning, purchasing and preparation of meals within an allocated budget. General medical care is provided through the Locality Health Centre with whom patients are registered. The nursing staff and medical officers at Broadway Lodge provide emergency care and are “on call” in the main house 24 hours per day. Relaxation, art therapy, dance and aerobics classes are offered as part of the programme. Individual sessions for stress management, auricular acupuncture and other alternative therapies can be arranged at the discretion of the medical team. Patients are encouraged to attend AA / NA / OA meetings.
Families need help as well.
It is our experience, at Broadway Lodge, that relatives or close friends of an alcoholic or drug addicted person often need help themselves. Living with addiction is not easy. It brings confusion and distress. For anyone involved with someone suffering the effects, there are shared, similar experiences. The battles with powerless, preoccupation, isolation and low self-esteem become part of the fabric of “family life”. Family and friends know, only to well, the fruitless struggle to control the uncontrollable and the difficulties of recognising and sharing the emotions that accompany the fight with this illness. Addiction wreaks havoc leaving a trail of chaos and debris in its wake. The 3-day family programme aims to create a safe environment within which participants can identify and explore experiences, emotions and behaviours that may have been affected and influenced through someone else’s addiction. Individually, and through group discussion, participants are encouraged to gain insight, self-awareness and information to help in the process of understanding addiction and its impact. Through identifying the effect of addiction on the family and identification of family roles, the way forward to change will become clearer. If you would like help as a family member then contact Broadway Lodge on 01934 815515 to discuss the Family Programme.
