Duran Duran’s John Taylor appointed patron of Mount Carmel
John Taylor, cofounder of Duran Duran, has accepted the role of Patron of Mount Carmel, the south London alcohol treatment centre.
John’s years in the music business and his 19 years in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction are graphically described in his autobiography: In The Pleasure Groove: Love, Death, and Duran Duran. On taking on the role of patron, John explained the reasons for lending his personal support to Mount Carmel:
“I was delighted to be asked by my friends at Mount Carmel to become their patron. From my first visit to Mount Carmel, I have been impressed by the work they do there, changing lives to the good, and by the safe and welcoming atmosphere. I also have a solid belief in their methods.
“Mount Carmel is not an exclusive, champagne and caviar rehab (if in fact there is such a thing), in that they provide a service open and affordable to all. I hope that, over time, my reputation as a musician and songwriter, living sober, as an advocate of rehab and 12-step programmes, can be of assistance to them in a number of ways.”
Ruth Allonby, Mount Carmel’s CEO, described why John is exactly the right person for Mount Carmel. “Obviously, John is very widely known and respected for his music. But it was the story of his recovery from addiction that I found so compelling when I heard him give the Plenary Address last summer at UKESAD, the addiction symposium. Our paths crossed again shortly after that, and we began discussing the position of patron.
“He has an infectious enthusiasm for addressing alcohol addiction through residential treatment and the 12-step programme, which has already benefitted Mount Carmel through group sessions he has held with our clients. He talks about this recovery journey in an excellent short video on our website. And John also meets with a number of the key players in UK alcohol policy, so he is well informed on the latest developments in the treatment field.
“For all those reasons I’m extremely pleased John is our patron – our first patron – and we look forward to working with him into the future.”
